Creating a Sanctuary: How Refreshing My Home Helped Me Reconnect with Myself
Last week, I had the rare opportunity to spend a few days alone while my partner and child were away for spring break. I took time off to focus on myself—something that feels like a luxury these days—and decided it was the perfect moment to shift the energy in our home and create a sanctuary that invites rest, connection, and nourishment.
I’ve lived in the same home for 15 years, and over time, I’ve made it more ours, focusing on upgrades that feel like improvements and are easily reversible. Our kitchen, however, felt outdated and cluttered. We rarely sat at the table, and I knew I needed to refresh the space so it could better serve us as a family.
With the boys away, I had time to repaint and declutter. The old yellow walls—while nostalgic—felt dingy and no longer worked for us. I chose a soft, earthy beige called Palo Santo from Backdrop for the walls, complemented by warm white trim in Moonlight. It’s a color that keeps the space open and inviting, balancing the rich mustard tone in our living room and the honey-oak cupboards.
After painting, I rearranged the dining table, replaced the curtains, and did some deep cleaning. The kitchen now feels fresh, bright, and ready to welcome us for family meals. Since finishing, I’ve been lighting The Fool candle from April’s Ritual Box every morning as part of my new ritual. It’s made my morning routine feel more intentional, and I’ve loved the results. (I’ll be sharing the tea and candle for May’s Ritual Box soon!) You can explore our Ritual Boxes here.
Next up is our bedroom—a project I’ll tackle over the next few months. But, just as I put love and care into my home, I do the same at Lavender Moon Wellness. I want everyone who steps into the space to feel the same sense of calm and renewal. Clean lines, low clutter, plenty of plants, and inviting sensory experiences all work together to create a sanctuary where you can truly unwind.
Tips for Creating Your Own Sanctuary
Clear the Clutter: Start by removing items that no longer serve you—this could be anything from outdated décor to unnecessary paperwork. Letting go of physical clutter can clear mental space as well.
Choose Calming Colors: Soft, warm tones invite peace into a room. I chose a gentle new shade for the kitchen to open up the space and add warmth without overwhelming it.
Bring Nature Inside: Plants, flowers, and natural materials help ground us. Consider adding a small indoor garden or a vase of fresh flowers to invite vitality into your space.
Create Rituals: Small rituals can transform your environment. Whether it’s lighting a candle, sipping a cup of tea, or setting an intention for the day, these moments help reinforce a sense of peace. I’ve found that lighting my candle from the Ritual Box makes a world of difference in setting the tone for my day. Creating this refreshed space allowed me to reconnect with my own rituals and set intentions for spending quality time with family. Our surroundings reflect our wellness journey, and when you align your space with your self-care needs, every room becomes a place to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself.
