Modalities

We see massage as a creative & collaborative process.

Your therapist may incorporate a variety of techniques and modalities into each session. Brief descriptions can be found below. We will work closely together to customize sessions that cater to your unique needs and preferences. We are happy to answer any questions you have about these modalities!

Aromatherapy uses essential oils to create an atmosphere or mood. Whether you’re hoping for something cozy, uplifting, relaxing, or refreshing, aromatherapy can be a delightful addition to your massage. Over the last decade Samantha has studied the safety and efficacy of aromatherapy and essential oil use, as well as intermediate level herbalism. I use this knowledge to create proprietary aromatherapy blends geared toward addressing physical and emotional symptoms. We can work together to create a custom blend just for you!

Cupping is the use of silicone or vacuum pump cups to encourage: movement of qi; increased circulation and lymph flow; and deep myofascial release of areas that feel “stuck”. I also use cups to stimulate acupoints when appropriate.

Deep Tissue Massage does not always equate to deep pressure. I work with varying techniques to create lasting change. While there may be some intensity, our goal is not to create pain to relieve pain, but rather create relaxation to allow for release.

Gua Sha involves using a tool to scrape areas of “sticky” or stubborn fascia and connective tissues. This technique has a similar effect to cupping–increasing circulation and qi flow, while encouraging effective release. The tool may also be used to stimulate specific acupoints to assist in relief.

Myofascial Release involves slow, sustained pressure applied by the hands to areas where fascial tissue restricts mobility and may cause pain. The movement stretches the skin and fascia underneath, freeing up fluid within layers of tissue. The pressure used is gentle yet is believed to reach deeper layers of muscle and nerves than deep forms of bodywork.

Prenatal Massage involves placing pregnant clients in a side lying position, bolstered with cozy pillows to support the body. Pregnancy-safe techniques are employed to provide pain relief and/or relaxation based on your specific needs. Iva and Samantha currently offer prenatal massage services.

Tui Na is a traditional Chinese acupressure massage that incorporates knowledge of 5-Element Theory and energetic meridians.
